What is TLD?

Top Level Domain or TLDs refers to the last part of a web address that comes after the "dot". for example, in the url https://gauravgo.com the ".com" portion is the TLD. TLDs were created by ARPANET to help humans remember IP addresses more easily. The domain name system was created to organise addresses in a more user-friendly manner, rather than using a series of digits for each computer. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the organisation in charge of internet domains and IP addresses.

GauravGo is a hosting company which provides a domain name lookup & registration tool. There are various TLDs to choose from. You can create an unique domain name for your brand and register it in few easy steps.

Types of TLDs:

  1. Generic TLDs - These are the most commonly used TLDs in use, such as '.com', '.org', '.net', etc.
  2. Sponsored TLDs - These TLDs are usually associated with professional, ethnic, or geographical communities. Each sponsored top-level domain (sTLD) has a designated sponsor who represents the community. For example, '.app' is a TLD sponsored by Google that is intended for the developer community.
  3. Country-code TLDs - Country-code TLDs or ccTLDs are reserved for use by countries such as '.in' for India, '.us' for USA, '.au' for Australia, etc.
  4. Reserved TLDs - Some TLDs are on a reserved list, which means they are not available for use in the future. '.localhost,' for example, is reserved for use in local computer environments, while '.example' is reserved for use in example purposes.

For many years, '.com' was regarded as the only viable option for businesses seeking to be taken seriously. However, experts predict that as the supply of '.com' domains diminishes and some of the newer TLDs gain traction, there will be a significant shift in the perception of alternative TLDs. So it may be better to create a clever and memorable domain name using an alternative TLD rather than try to claim on a '.com' domain.
